In Chapter One, we met the people of Community Valley and discovered that something wasn’t quite right.
The lanterns that connected people to friendship, community and opportunity had begun to dim, and mysterious visitors known as the Keepers of the Ledger were making their way towards the valley.
Now, the people of Community Valley face their first challenge.
Can they protect the connections that help everyone belong?
Chapter Two: The Bridge of Belonging
The next morning, the people of Community Valley awoke to an unusual silence.
Usually the valley was alive with birds singing, bowling balls rolling, children laughing and neighbours chatting.
But today…
The great Lantern Network flickered again.
One by one, little threads of light connecting people to their favourite places began disappearing.
The art studio.
The music group.
The community garden.
The walking club.
The bowling alley.
None of them had vanished completely, but they suddenly felt much farther away.
“This is how it starts,” Courtney said quietly. “Not with everything disappearing overnight. Just with people finding it a little harder to take part.”
The group nodded. They knew that when barriers grow, opportunities can shrink.
Just then, a burst of laughter echoed down the main street.
“Make way!”
A woman wearing a rainbow jacket, bright yellow leggings and sparkling pink roller skates came gliding around the corner.
She twirled twice before stopping with a grin.
“Sorry I’m late,” she laughed. “I took the scenic route.”
“Anita!” shouted Grace, running over for a hug.
Anita loved bright colours almost as much as she loved roller skating. Wherever she went, people smiled because she made every day feel like a celebration.
Behind her walked Lou Christie, carrying a picnic basket and smiling warmly.
“I’ve learned,” Lou said with a chuckle, “that it’s impossible to keep up with Anita on skates.”
“Only because you keep stopping to admire the flowers,” Anita teased.
Jason clapped his hands.
“Welcome aboard! Today’s complimentary nickname is… Rainbow Rocket!”
“I love it!” Anita laughed.
Miss Rachel walked over carrying a tray of colourful cupcakes.
“Today’s word is belonging.”
Everyone repeated it together.
“Belonging.”
“It means everyone has a place where they are welcomed, valued and included,” Miss Rachel explained.
Before anyone could reply, a loud crack echoed through the square.
The group turned.
The beautiful Bridge of Belonging, which connected the town to the community centre, had begun to crumble.
One plank disappeared.
Then another.
Then another.
PG frowned.
“If that bridge disappears, lots of people won’t be able to get to bowling.”
“And dance classes,” Claire added.
“And burger night,” Jade said, looking horrified.
“And our Story Tree gatherings,” Jason added.
Courtney looked closely.
“It isn’t breaking,” she realised.
“It’s being forgotten.”
The group looked puzzled.
“The Lantern Network grows stronger whenever people are connected,” Courtney explained. “If those connections weaken, the bridges between people begin to disappear.”
Grace tilted her head thoughtfully.
“So if we strengthen the connections…”
“…the bridge will come back,” Anita finished.
And so the people of Community Valley got to work.
Miss Rachel encouraged nervous children.
Jason made strangers smile.
Moody Judy comforted worried neighbours.
Jade served her famous chicken burgers.
Claire filled the air with music.
PG invited everyone to a free bowling afternoon.
Grace handed out colourful handmade scarves.
Courtney quietly helped anyone who needed an extra hand.
Anita skated from person to person, inviting everyone to join in.
As laughter filled the valley, something magical happened.
The missing bridge planks slowly reappeared.
One by one.
Each smile restored another plank.
Each act of kindness strengthened another beam.
Each friendship added another handrail.
Soon, the Bridge of Belonging stood stronger than ever.
Far away in the mountains, the Keepers of the Ledger watched.
“They’ve repaired it,” one muttered.
“How?” asked another.
“They didn’t spend more gold.”
The elder Keeper frowned.
“They strengthened the community.”
Back in Community Valley, the people celebrated.
But deep beneath the town, the Lantern Network glowed brighter than ever before.
The challenge wasn’t over.
The Keepers still believed that everything important could be measured.
The people of Community Valley believed that friendship, belonging, purpose and support could only be measured by the light they brought to people’s lives.
And that difference was about to be tested.
