In a significant announcement this week, Centacare confirmed it will withdraw from NDIS-funded disability services across Queensland by the end of 2025. The decision, which follows more than 40 years of service, will affect around 700 disability services clients and 600 staff, stretching from the Gold Coast to Hervey Bay and west to Kingaroy and Gatton.
Centacare’s review cited financial challenges with the current NDIS service model, prompting the organisation to step back from Supported Independent Living, medium and short-term accommodation, Onsite Shared Support, Social and Life Skills Hubs, and NDIS-funded home and community supports.
While Centacare will continue its aged care, family, and pastoral services, its exit from the disability sector leaves a considerable gap for participants, families, and the Support Coordinators who guide them.
The Impact on Participants and Coordinators
For participants and their families, news of a trusted provider leaving can feel unsettling. Questions about continuity of care, access to quality supports, and the risk of “waitlist limbo” weigh heavily.
For Support Coordinators, the challenge is equally pressing: finding reliable, registered providers who can take on complex referrals and provide consistent, person-led outcomes.
