At CSBS, we often talk about the importance of the right environment, consistency, and support. Recently, we brought that idea to life in a simple and surprisingly adopted way through our Plant Revival Challenge.
It started with a group of struggling office plants (let’s be honest we’re terrible at looking after the office plants). But, instead of throwing them out, we decided to give them a second chance, placing them in new environments across our SIL homes and the Caloundra Community Hub, where participants and staff could care for them together.
A Different Kind of Support
The plants were adopted by teams and supported day-to-day by the people who choose us. That support looked like watering, repotting, finding the right light, and simply paying attention to what each plant needed.
There was no pressure for perfection. In fact, from the beginning, the focus was never on whether the plants “survived” but on the process of caring for something consistently and seeing what happens when the environment is right. Sounds familiar right.
What We Saw
Every plant on the list was adopted and the results have been incredible.
Some are now thriving.
Some are slowly finding their feet.
And some… are still figuring things out.
But across the board, what stood out wasn’t just the plants, it was the engagement, creativity, and care from the people who choose us and their teams along the way.
It’s early days yet but we’ve had a few check ins and it seems as though the plants are doing, just fine.
Why This Matters
It has occurred to us that even though this challenge is about helping plants to thrive, it’s also about something we see every day in our work that with the right support, consistency, and environment, growth becomes possible.
It reflects how we approach support at CSBS:
- Taking the time to understand what’s needed
- Creating the right environment for growth
- Supporting in a way that’s consistent and meaningful to help things grow and thrive
A Snapshot of Life at CSBS
This kind of initiative might seem small, but it speaks to something bigger.
At CSBS, we look for simple, practical ways to build connection, involve everyone in everyday activities, and create shared moments that feel purposeful and engaging. Do we nail it every time, no. We’ll learn and keep trying – of course.
Whether it’s supporting someone to build independence, connect with their community, or bring a plant back to life, the approach is the same; person‑led, consistent, and grounded in real relationships in the right conditions.
So, how’s it going?
Every plant is now in its new home and importantly, still being cared for.
Some have become centrepieces.
Some have become ongoing “projects.”
All of them have sparked conversations, connection, and involvement.
And that’s a pretty good outcome for what started as a few struggling plants.

For now, it’s safe to say: second chances, the right environment, and a bit of consistency can go a long way.
