Quick Summary
The NDIS is introducing a new planning system designed to make things simpler, fairer, and more flexible for participants. The changes aim to reduce paperwork, focus more on individual needs, and allow more time and funding to go directly toward supports.
What’s Changing?
The way NDIS plans are created is set to change, with a stronger focus on understanding each participant’s unique support needs.
Instead of relying heavily on reports, the new process will centre around:
- A conversation about the participant’s needs
- A short questionnaire
- Additional assessments only if needed
This means fewer reports will be required, allowing both participants and providers to spend less time on paperwork and more time on actual support.
Fairer, More Flexible Budgets
Under the new framework, budgets will be based on a person’s overall support needs rather than being tightly tied to specific line items.
This is expected to:
- Create more flexibility in how supports are used
- Improve fairness across plans
- Ensure funding better reflects real-life needs
Importantly, all plans will still be approved by a real person.
When Will This Happen?
The rollout is expected to begin mid-2026, starting with a small group of adult participants.
This gradual approach will help ensure the new system works well before expanding further. Most participants will remain on their current plans during the transition.
There’s nothing participants need to do right now – they’ll be contacted when it’s their turn to move to the new system.
What Happens Next?
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is currently reviewing feedback from public consultations. More detailed information will be shared once the final rules are confirmed.
